About Loma San Jerónimo Neighborhood

The Loma San Jerónimo neighborhood is Asunción's oldest district and one of the most historically and culturally rich in all of Paraguay. Its occupation dates back to before the city's founding in 1537, when it was inhabited by Guaraní indigenous communities. Its name comes from the friars of the Order of Hieronymite Monks who arrived with the Spanish conquest. Declared Historic, Urban and Cultural Heritage by municipal ordinance and a Protected Patrimonial Asset by the Ministry of Education, the neighborhood was designated Asunción's first Tourist Neighborhood in 2013. Its most distinctive features are its brightly painted houses, artistic murals on the walls, cobblestone streets, narrow passages, staircases and small plazas. From the upper part of the neighborhood, one of the most beautiful views of the Paraguay River and the Asunción skyline can be seen. On weekends, residents offer typical Paraguayan food — chipa, mbejú, sopa paraguaya — directly in the streets. For the foreign visitor, Loma San Jerónimo is an authentic and unmissable experience: a living neighborhood that combines history, street art, local gastronomy and spectacular views.
