Basilica of Our Lady of Miracles of Caacupé

The Basilica of Our Lady of Miracles of Caacupé is Paraguay's most important sanctuary and the country's "Spiritual Capital". Located 54 km from Asunción in Caacupé, Cordillera department, this Catholic basilica houses the image of Paraguay's patron Virgin. Every December 8th, during the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, more than one million pilgrims walk from all corners of the country, making it one of South America's largest pilgrimages. The current neoclassical basilica, inaugurated in 1765, is one of the country's largest churches. Caacupé also offers historical museums, leather and ceramic crafts, pilgrimage routes and access to Lake Ypacaraí.
