About Museo Mitológico Ramón Elías
The Ramón Elías Mythological Museum is named after its founder, Ramón Elías (Asunción, November 10, 1929 – February 28, 1981), a painter, restorer, and geometric drawing teacher at the Colegio Nacional de Capiatá between 1967 and 1972, with a passion for Guaraní culture. He died in a car accident on the way to Encarnación. The museum was founded in 1979 and is now run by his daughter, Elsa Elías, who leads the guided tours.
The museum sits at Km 19 of Ruta 2 Mariscal Estigarribia, in Capiatá, a short distance from Asunción. Its collection is arranged in five rooms: one devoted to sculptures of Guaraní mythological beings — including the Pombero, the Luisón, the Jasy Jatére, the Ao Ao, and the Ka'aguy Póra (a forest-guardian spirit, sometimes confused in other spellings with "Ka'a Pore") — another of colonial sacred art and objects from the Jesuit-Franciscan period, a third with 19th-century pieces and artifacts from the country's historic wars (the War of the Triple Alliance and the Chaco War), and two further rooms dedicated to the founder's personal history and his desk.
The museum is also a space for cultural education: guided visits narrate the legends and myths that form part of the Paraguayan and Guaraní collective imagination. For foreign visitors — especially Argentines and Brazilians who share part of this cultural heritage — it offers an experience unlike any other cultural space in the region.
