Gran Hotel del Paraguay is the oldest operating hotel in Asunción and one of the few hotels in South America that functions within a genuine 19th-century historic mansion. The building originally served as the residence of Eliza Lynch, companion to Marshal Francisco Solano López, and dates from the 1850s. Acquired and converted into a hotel in 1921, the complex remarkably preserves its colonial architecture, arcaded galleries, and lush gardens spanning over three hectares, now recognized as a historic heritage site. The hotel features an outdoor pool, a restaurant serving Paraguayan and international cuisine, event halls, and rooms with historic décor — some overlooking the gardens. Its neighborhood, La Residenta, sits on the slopes of the historic center and offers a quiet, residential atmosphere distinct from the busy downtown core. For long-term expats, investors, and diplomats, Gran Hotel del Paraguay provides a uniquely regional accommodation experience: living history, tropical gardens, and intimate scale.
