Observatorio Astronómico Niokit Owush Ishir

An astronomical observatory inspired by Ishir cosmovision

Bahía Negra

About Observatorio Astronómico Niokit Owush Ishir

The Niokit Owush Ishir Astronomical Observatory combines astronomy with the cosmovision of the Ishir people, one of the Indigenous peoples of the Paraguayan Chaco. The site has a telescope for night viewing, a multimedia projection room, and teaching aids such as a gnomon and models of the solar system and the galaxy.

It was promoted by Senatur as part of diversifying the tourism offer in Bahía Negra, at the northern tip of the Chaco, on the edge of the Pantanal. The quality of the area's night sky, with very low light pollution, is one of its main draws.
