Pedro Juan Caballero is the capital of the Amambay department, on the dry border with Brazil: the city runs seamlessly into Ponta Porã, on the Brazilian side, separated only by an avenue. It is one of the country's most important border trade hubs, with constant movement of people crossing back and forth. Its proximity to Ponta Porã also draws visitors who cross over to shop or spend the day on the other side. The crossing between the two cities is one of the busiest along the entire border with Brazil.
