About Carlos Antonio López Central Railway Station

The Carlos Antonio López Central Railway Station is one of Asunción's most emblematic historic buildings and has been declared National Historic Heritage by Law 174 of 1993. Inaugurated in 1861, the station was the starting point of Paraguay's first railroad — and one of the first in South America — a steam locomotive built in England that made Paraguay a pioneer of modern transportation in the region, just decades after the train was invented. For over a century, the station was the logistical and social heart of Asunción. Today it functions as a Railway Museum and Cultural Center, where visitors can tour rooms displaying telegraphs, telephones, administrative documents, original blueprints of the rail network, personnel files and historic safes. The outdoor yard preserves original locomotives, wagons and railway equipment. A special room recreates first and second class compartments from the old trains. For the foreign visitor, this station is a portal to a golden era of 19th-century Paraguay, when the country was one of the most prosperous and industrialized in Latin America. Open Tuesday to Sunday.
