About Fortín Boquerón (Boquerón Fort)
Fortín Boquerón is the foremost historic military site of the Paraguayan Chaco and one of the best-preserved forts in the region. Established on 19 July 1928 as a military outpost, it became famous for the Battle of Boquerón, fought between 9 and 29 September 1932 during the Chaco War (1932–1935) between Paraguay and Bolivia. After twenty days of fierce combat, the Paraguayan Army retook the position on 29 September 1932, a date now commemorated as a national milestone.
Today it houses a free-access field museum, open Wednesday to Sunday, 07:00–17:00, displaying weapons, documents, maps and period photographs. The visit includes the trench lines surrounding the fort, the Paraguayan and Bolivian cemeteries, the "friendship tombstone," and standout pieces such as the Potez 25 TOE aircraft of the Paraguayan air force and a wartime Ford truck. It lies in the Boquerón District, Boquerón Department (Western Region, near Neuland Colony), about 46 km from the Gran Chaco Americano Interpretation Center.
