Three Borders Landmark (Hito Tres Fronteras)

The Three Borders Landmark (Hito Tres Fronteras) is one of the main tourist attractions in Presidente Franco, about 10 km from Ciudad del Este, in the Alto Paraná department. It marks the point where the Paraná and Iguazú rivers meet and where the borders of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil converge. The site features an obelisk painted in the colors of the Paraguayan flag (red, white and blue); across the water you can see the twin landmarks of Argentina (Puerto Iguazú) and Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu), each in its national colors.

The Paraguayan obelisk was erected in 1964, 61 years after the Argentine and Brazilian ones (inaugurated in 1903). Today the site offers river viewpoints, a crafts fair and, after dark, a dancing-waters light show. It should not be confused with the Iguazú Falls: this is a border viewpoint on the banks of the triple frontier. It is easily reached from Ciudad del Este through Presidente Franco.
