Municipal Market No. 4 (Mercado 4)
Asunción's beating commercial heart
About Municipal Market No. 4 (Mercado 4)
The Municipal Market No. 4, popularly known as Mercado 4, is the largest and most iconic traditional market in Asunción. It was created by decree in 1942 under the government of Higinio Morínigo, when vendors relocated from the old Mercado Guasu (today's Plaza de la Democracia). It sits in the Pettirossi neighborhood and sprawls across a large triangle between Pettirossi, Próceres de Mayo, Rodríguez de Francia and Perú avenues, spilling into the San Roque, Ciudad Nueva and Pinozá districts.
It is a retail commercial hub that draws tens of thousands of visitors daily, with thousands of stalls and shops selling practically everything: fruit, vegetables, groceries, clothing, electronics, crafts and typical Paraguayan food. Its alleys, shaded by the trademark orange tarps, are a must-see for anyone wanting to experience Asunción's grassroots life; the market was even the main setting of the Paraguayan film "7 cajas" (2012). To get there, it is just minutes from downtown via Avenida Pettirossi or Rodríguez de Francia.
