About Guaraní Jesuit Mission of San Cosme and Damián

The Jesuit Mission of San Cosme and Damián, founded in 1632, is one of Paraguay's most unique historical sites. It stands out as the only one of the 30 Guaraní reductions in South America with its college still standing. It displays 22 hand-carved wooden images, some with original polychrome. The mission was home to Jesuit priest Buenaventura Suárez, recognized as the first astronomer of the Southern Hemisphere, whose legacy lives on in the Astronomical Interpretation Center offering solar and nighttime telescope observations. A single ticket (valid 72 hours) covers all three Itapúa missions.
