About Jesuit Mission of San Ignacio Guazú

San Ignacio Guazú, officially founded in 1609 by Father Roque González de Santa Cruz, is the first Jesuit mission established in Paraguay and the "Capital of Hispanic-Guaraní Baroque". Located 226 km from Asunción in the Misiones department. Its Diocesan Museum of Guaraní Jesuit Art, housed in the ancient indigenous college from the Jesuit era, is among the oldest buildings of all the missions. The museum has four rooms with carved wooden images, historical maps and documents. In May 2026, the MUVA Jesuítica — a new art museum — opened to resignify the Guaraní-Jesuit legacy. During Holy Week, actors stage living tableaux recreating famous paintings.
