About Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve

The Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve is one of Paraguay's most important protected areas and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2000. Located in the northeast of Canindeyú department, it conserves over 64,000 hectares of one of the last continuous remnants of the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest, one of the planet's most threatened ecosystems. The reserve has recorded 1,269 plant species, 93 mammals, 440 birds (62 endemic to the Atlantic Forest), 27 amphibians and 35 reptiles. Endangered species including jaguar, tapir and harpy eagle inhabit it. Ecotourism is conducted from the Mbaracayú Lodge, offering guided ecological trails, birdwatching, canoeing, rappelling, night walks and stargazing. Over 9,200 people visited in 2022.
