Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, together with Taiwanese authorities, has announced the creation of Yguazú Digital, a binational entity aimed at developing one of the largest artificial intelligence centers in the world. With a potential investment of US$3 billion, the project aspires to become the largest AI hub in South America, marking a milestone in Paraguay's technological strategy.
Yguazú Digital stands out not only for its financial magnitude but also for its energy demand. According to official estimates, the data center will consume the equivalent of one and a half turbines from the Itaipú hydroelectric dam, one of the largest in the world. This underscores the commitment to leveraging the abundant clean energy generated by Paraguay, positioning the country as an attractive destination for computing-intensive industries.
The alliance with Taiwan strengthens diplomatic and commercial ties between both territories. Taiwan, a leader in semiconductors and technology, brings expertise and capital, while Paraguay offers cheap energy and a strategic location in the heart of South America. This project could catalyze the arrival of other technological investments and foster a local innovation ecosystem.
However, the ambitious plan faces challenges. Energy infrastructure must be expanded to support demand without affecting other sectors. Additionally, training specialized human talent is crucial to operate and maintain these facilities. Paraguay must invest in technical and scientific education to avoid relying solely on foreign experts.
In the region, Yguazú Digital competes with similar initiatives in Brazil and Chile, but its scale and partnership with Taiwan give it a distinctive advantage.
