About Humaitá

Humaitá is a district of the Ñeembucú department world-renowned for the Fortress of Humaitá, a defensive stronghold that Paraguay built on the Paraguay River and which resisted the Allied advance for several years during the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870). The ruins of the fortress — including the church and the chains that blocked river passage — stand as tangible testimony to that period and are considered national historical heritage.

Beyond its historical significance, Humaitá is framed by the natural setting of the Ñeembucú wetlands and marshes, with the Paraguay River as its territorial axis. Extensive cattle ranching and fishing are part of the district's economic life today.
