About Nueva Germania

Nueva Germania is a district in northern San Pedro department whose singular history sets it apart in the Paraguayan context. Founded in the late nineteenth century as a German immigrant colony by Bernhard Förster and Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche—sister of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche—it aimed to establish a German-speaking agricultural settlement in the country's interior. Although the original colonization project did not achieve its intended goals, the community survived and gradually integrated into Paraguayan life while preserving some cultural traits of its origins. Today the district has a predominantly agricultural economy, with subsistence crops and cattle ranching in a subtropical forest setting.
