About Museo de la Estación Central del Ferrocarril Carlos Antonio López
The Carlos Antonio López Central Railway Station Museum, known as the Railway Museum, is housed in Asunción's train station, a National Historic Monument. Paraguay had one of South America's first railways: according to the museum's chronology, the first passenger train left this station on October 21, 1861, bound for Ybyraty-Trinidad.
The visit walks through Paraguay's railway history, following its chronology:
- 1861: first passenger train.
- 1864: the station building is inaugurated.
- 1865: the war dismantles most of the network.
- 1889: an English consortium creates the Ferrocarril Central del Paraguay.
- 1894: Sapucai workshops.
- 1911: the train reaches Encarnación.
- 1996: the Yacyretá reservoir floods the tracks.
- 1999: passenger service ends.
Under the hall stands a wooden passenger car. Inside are a ticket office, a telegraph, safes and clocks, locomotive bells and lamps, a model of the «Sapucai» locomotive and pieces from the Sapucai and Asunción workshops. The historic map «Estaciones del Ferrocarril paraguayo» lays out the line by kilometer: Asunción (km 0), Botánico (km 7) and Luque (km 15) are the first stops.
