About Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo
El Cabildo is a historic building constructed around 1844 during the government of Carlos Antonio López, designed by Spanish architect Pascual Urdapilleta. It served as the seat of the Executive branch until 1894, when the government moved to the Palacio de López, and ten years later it began housing the Legislative branch until 2003, when Congress moved to its own building. On May 14, 2004, the building was reinaugurated as the Centro Cultural de la República, under the National Congress.
The center houses several themed halls: Sala del Barro, Sala de Arte Sacro, Sala Guido Boggiani, Sala de Música, Sala Cabildo, and Sala de Cine, in addition to the library of Paraguayan writer Augusto Roa Bastos. These halls display content on national history, music (with a section dedicated to guitarist and composer Agustín Pío Barrios "Mangoré"), film, folk and indigenous art, sacred art, and immigration and foreign communities settled in Paraguay.
El Cabildo is part of Asunción's historic downtown, facing the Plaza de la Independencia and near the Palacio de López and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
