About Panteón Nacional de los Héroes
The Panteón Nacional de los Héroes y Oratorio de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the Paraguayan reinterpretation of the Panthéon of Paris, inspired more specifically by the Hôtel des Invalides (Les Invalides) of France. Its construction began in 1863 by order of then-president Francisco Solano López, with the original intention of erecting a temple dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, designed by Italian architect Alessandro Ravizza (with the later collaboration of Polish architect Brunon Edward Paprocki). The War of the Triple Alliance delayed its completion for more than 70 years.
The building was inaugurated as the National Pantheon on October 12, 1936, and as an oratory on May 15, 1939, in neoclassical style and with an area of about 900 square meters. Inside rest the remains of central figures in Paraguayan history: Marshal Francisco Solano López (the first to be interred, in 1936), an unknown soldier from the Battle of Boquerón, President Carlos Antonio López, Marshal José Félix Estigarribia and his wife Julia Miranda Cueto, General Bernardino Caballero, the Child Martyrs of Acosta Ñu, and other national founding fathers.
Located in the heart of Asunción's historic center, the Pantheon is guarded by an honor guard and is a mandatory stop for foreign delegations and visitors to the capital.
