About Teatro Municipal Ignacio A. Pane
The Teatro Municipal Ignacio A. Pane is Asunción's oldest theater and one of Paraguay's cultural icons. The original building was constructed in 1843 at presidential request on the site of the former National Congress building, and was inaugurated as a theater hall on November 4, 1855. In 1889, a new building was inaugurated — then called the "Teatro Nacional" — commissioned by Catalan businessman Baudilio Alió, in neoclassical style. In 1949 (according to the Municipality of Asunción, 1939) it was renamed Teatro Municipal "Ignacio A. Pane" in honor of the Paraguayan writer and politician.
Closed due to deterioration in 1995, the theater underwent a major restoration between 2004 and 2005 that integrated the historic sections with contemporary stage standards, reopening on January 20, 2006. It is designated Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Paraguay under Law No. 3962. The main hall, horseshoe-shaped with three tiers of boxes, has seating for approximately 600-700 depending on the source (602 according to the Municipality of Asunción, 700 according to Wikipedia), a stage of 225 square meters, and an orchestra pit for about 90 musicians. The complex also includes the Café del Teatro, the Sala Baudilio Alió, and the Sala Jacinto Herrera for other cultural activities.
