Paraguay's first minor basilica.

Pilar

About

The Minor Basilica and Regional Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Pilar was the first church in Paraguay to receive that rank, by papal decree. Its interior, clad in Italian marble, is the result of a renovation begun in 1960 by fathers Federico Schiavon and Santino Tessei.

It stands in the center of the city of Pilar, capital of the Ñeembucú department, and also serves as a regional Marian sanctuary for the south of the country.
