Encarnación's cathedral, built between 1928 and 1938 in brick.

Encarnación Downtown

About

Construction of the current Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Santísima Encarnación began in 1913 at the initiative of Father José Kreusser and resumed in earnest between 1928 and 1938, after a pause in 1932 due to lack of funds. The bricks were brought from Areguá by train, back when the railway still reached that area.

In 1957, with the creation of the Prelature of Itapúa, the church was elevated to cathedral. It stands in the center of the city of Encarnación, capital of the Itapúa department, and is a landmark of the local religious circuit.
