Paraguay is, along with Uruguay, one of the most price-competitive markets in South America for regional consumers. If you come from Argentina, Chile, Brazil or Uruguay, the price difference in certain categories can be significant enough that the trip pays for itself.
Why are prices lower?
The explanation is fiscal: Paraguay applies a 10% VAT (vs. 21% in Argentina or 19% in Chile) and has no internal taxes on consumer goods. For imported electronics, tariffs are low or non-existent within MERCOSUR.
Electronics
An iPhone 15 Pro Max costs between USD 1,000–1,100 in Paraguay, vs. USD 1,600–1,900 in Argentina. Laptops, tablets, cameras and accessories have similar differences of 30–45%.
Fuel
Paraguay has one of the cheapest fuels in the region: ~USD 0.90/liter. For those crossing by car, filling up in Encarnación or Ciudad del Este makes a noticeable difference.
New cars
New cars in Paraguay are priced 20–35% lower than in Argentina. There is no internal excise tax on automobiles. VAT is 10% (vs. 21% + internal taxes in Argentina).
