About Nanawa

Nanawa is a district of the Presidente Hayes department with a prominent place in Paraguayan history: the Battle of Nanawa was fought on its territory during the Chaco War (1932–1935), one of the most intense engagements of that conflict between Paraguay and Bolivia over control of the Chaco Boreal.

Today the district maintains the extensive agricultural and cattle-farming profile characteristic of the southern Chaco, with low population density and vast stretches of scrubland and pasture. Its name endures linked to national historical memory and the feat of Paraguayan forces in that war.
