About Puerto Casado

Puerto Casado is a district in the Alto Paraguay department with a history tied to the tannin industry derived from quebracho, a tree abundant in the Chaco. For decades, the tannin trade shaped the economic and social rhythm of the place, which was originally a company enclave on the bank of the Paraguay River.

Today, the town retains its character as a river port on the Paraguay River, although the tannin industry that gave it its name and prominence belongs to the past. Extensive cattle ranching and scarce land communications define the present of this corner of the northern Paraguayan Chaco.
