About Museo del Barro
The Museo del Barro, whose institutional name is Centro de Artes Visuales – Museo del Barro, is a private institution founded in 1979 by artists Olga Blinder and Carlos Colombino. Its origins date back to 1972, when the two created a traveling collection of prints and drawings meant to circulate through public and educational spaces; that collection eventually gave rise to a permanent museum dedicated to gathering and preserving the large collection of indigenous ceramics that characterizes it today.
The museum is organized into three collections or "museums" within a single building: the Museo de Arte Indígena, with pre-Columbian ceramic pieces; the Museo de Arte Popular; and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Paraguay. Together they hold more than 300 pre-Columbian ceramic pieces and around 4,000 objects in wood, textile, and metal spanning from the 17th century to the present, including work by contemporary Paraguayan artists.
It is considered one of the reference spaces for Paraguayan art, both for its indigenous and folk holdings and for its role as an exhibition center for contemporary visual arts.
