About Misión Jesuítica de la Santísima Trinidad del Paraná
The Jesuit Mission of La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná is the best-preserved Guaraní reduction in Paraguay. Founded in 1706 by the Jesuits, with priest and architect Juan Bautista Prímoli overseeing the design of the complex, it housed close to 3,000 Guaraní people by 1728. In 1993 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site jointly with the neighboring mission of Jesús de Tavarangüe, under the combined listing "Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangüe."
The complex preserves the main plaza, the principal church, a smaller church, the college, the cemetery and workshops, plus two on-site museums: the Museo Jesuítico and the Museo Lítico, which display carved stone pieces from the period. It is considered the most extensive and best-preserved Jesuit-Guaraní archaeological site in the country.
At night a light-and-sound show is staged over the ruins (the more elaborate 3D video-mapping installation belongs to the neighboring mission of Jesús de Tavarangüe). A single ticket — 40,000 guaraníes for foreigners, 25,000 for Paraguayans, a reduced rate for senior citizens, and free entry for children under 12, valid for 72 hours (current per an ABC Color report from April 2026) — grants access to all three Jesuit missions in Itapúa: Trinidad, Jesús de Tavarangüe, and San Cosme y Damián.
