About Boquerón

Boquerón is Paraguay's largest department by area, located in the heart of the western Chaco, with its capital in Filadelfia. The territory is widely known for its Mennonite colonies — Fernheim, Menno, and Neuland among the main ones — which transformed the Chaco landscape into a model of agricultural and livestock development. Dairy production and the meat industry are pillars of the departmental economy, with Mennonite cooperatives exporting to international markets. Boquerón was also the main theater of the Chaco War (1932–1935), the armed conflict between Paraguay and Bolivia over control of this region. The Boquerón Chaco is a dry tropical forest ecosystem with extreme climatic conditions and characteristic wildlife. Filadelfia, the capital, offers modern infrastructure in the midst of the Chaco and serves as the service hub for the entire western region.
