About Guairá
Guairá is one of Paraguay's smallest departments by area, yet it carries a particularly strong cultural identity. Its capital, Villarrica, is recognized as a center of cultural and intellectual life in the country: the city has been home to writers, poets, and artists who made significant contributions to Paraguayan culture. The department is located in the south-central Región Oriental, with a landscape of hills and valleys that sets it apart from the rest of the interior. Yerba mate production has deep historical roots in Guairá, and agriculture in general — alongside local commerce — underpins the regional economy. Villarrica combines a mid-sized city environment with a well-rooted cultural heritage, making it an appealing option for those who value regional identity in continental Paraguay.
