About

The National Sanctuary of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús, popularly known as Capilla Guazú for its large size, was completed in 1753 under the direction of parish priest Gaspar de Medina. Its hand-carved altarpiece is one of the most valued in the country.

In 1942, Archbishop Juan Sinforiano Bogarín declared it a National Sanctuary. During the War of the Triple Alliance, the church served as a stronghold in the Battle of Piribebuy, on August 12, 1869. It stands in the center of Piribebuy, in the Cordillera department.
