About Tacuaras

Tacuaras is a district of the Ñeembucú department in southwestern Paraguay. Its name refers to the tacuara — a native bamboo of the region — that characterises the vegetation along the banks of rivers and marshes in this southern Paraguayan department.

The district's territory is shaped by the wetlands and marshes typical of Ñeembucú, and its economy rests primarily on extensive cattle ranching. Like the rest of the department, Tacuaras is part of a region that experienced the events of the War of the Triple Alliance at close range during the nineteenth century.
