About Villa Hayes

Villa Hayes is the capital of the Presidente Hayes department, situated on the western bank of the Paraguay River directly across from Asunción. The town bears the name of US President Rutherford B. Hayes in recognition of his 1878 arbitration award, which granted Paraguay sovereignty over the Chaco territories disputed with Argentina. As the departmental seat, it concentrates administrative, health, and educational services for the region. Its proximity to the national capital makes it the main gateway into the southern Chaco, supporting steady cattle ranching and commercial activity throughout the year.
