Franciscan-Guaraní baroque in lapacho wood, national heritage since 2003.
About
The Yaguarón mission was founded in 1586 by Franciscan friars Luis Bolaños and Alonso de San Buenaventura, though the church seen today was built between 1755 and 1772. It is one of the most complete expressions of Franciscan-Guaraní baroque, built mainly in lapacho wood, with carved altarpieces covered in gold leaf.
Declared historical and cultural heritage under Law 2206 of 2003, the church is also on the tentative list Paraguay submitted to UNESCO in 2022 for possible World Heritage status. It stands in the center of Yaguarón, in the Paraguarí department, about 48 kilometers from Asunción.
