About Bahía Negra

Bahía Negra is the northernmost district of Paraguay, located at the far north of the Alto Paraguay department on the Paraguay River, at the border with Brazil. Its position at the edge of the country gives it a pronounced isolation and a virtually untouched natural environment, where the Pantanal wetlands extend across the Brazilian side of the border.

Access to the district is primarily by river. The local economy is based on extensive cattle ranching and subsistence activities, in line with the general profile of the northern Chaco. The scarce road infrastructure and remoteness from urban centers make this corner one of the most remote territories in Paraguay.
