About Fuerte Olimpo

Fuerte Olimpo is the capital of the Alto Paraguay department and one of the oldest settlements in the Paraguayan Chaco. Originally established as a military outpost on the western bank of the Paraguay River, it retains a frontier character and a strategic position that historically served as a control and defense point in the region. Access to the town still depends heavily on the river route: the Paraguay River is the main artery of communication in this area of extremely low population density. The local economy is sustained primarily by extensive cattle ranching, the dominant activity throughout the northern Paraguayan Chaco.
