About Paraguay
Paraguay is a landlocked country at the heart of South America, nestled between Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia. With just over 406,000 km² and a population of approximately 6.1 million (2022 Census), it combines two radically distinct geographic regions: the fertile and densely populated Eastern Region, separated by the Paraguay River from the vast and sparsely inhabited Western Region, or Chaco. The capital is Asunción, simultaneously a city and a department, the seat of national government, and the country's main financial, cultural, and academic center. Spanish and Guaraní are both official co-languages, making it a genuinely bilingual nation. Paraguay stands out globally for its low-tax economic model — no capital gains tax on personal assets and a low marginal Personal Income Tax — which attracts foreign direct investment and long-term residents from around the world. The currency is the guaraní (PYG), and the economy has shown more than two decades of sustained growth driven by agriculture, energy (Itaipú, the hydroelectric plant with the highest cumulative generation record in history, recognized by Guinness World Records in 2024, and the binational Yacyretá), livestock, and trade. For the international investor and expat, Paraguay offers a rare combination: low cost of living, streamlined legal residency processes, broad informal dollarization in real estate transactions, and a market in full expansion with strong appreciation potential in the coming years.
