About Pilar
Pilar is the capital of the Ñeembucú department and the main urban centre of southwestern Paraguay. Located on the bank of the Paraguay River across from the Argentine province of Formosa, the city concentrates the administrative, commercial, and service functions of the entire region, and its river port has historically been the connection point along the river corridor. Pilar's history is closely tied to the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), a period during which Ñeembucú was the scene of intense military operations. Today, the city serves as a gateway for exploring the department's wetlands and marshes — landscapes that harbour rich biodiversity and define the unique character of this corner of Paraguay.
