Salto del Guairá, Canindeyú
Centro
Salto del Guairá is the capital of the department of Canindeyú and one of the main border crossing points with Brazil in northeastern Paraguay, facing the Brazilian city of Guaíra. The city takes its name from the historic Saltos del Guairá, impressive waterfalls on the Paraná River that were submerged in 1982 when the Itaipú reservoir was filled. Its border location gives Salto del Guairá a particular commercial dynamism, with an economy oriented toward bilateral exchange and border trade. As the departmental capital, it concentrates the main administrative, educational, and health services of Canindeyú, and is also a convergence point for agricultural production from the department's interior.
